Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour for structure
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (preferably Dutch-processed) for rich chocolate flavor
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder to help with leavening
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt to enhance flavor

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup granulated sugar provides sweetness and moisture
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar (packed) adds moisture and a slight caramel flavor
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (melted) for moisture and rich flavor
  • 2 large eggs binds ingredients together
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract adds warmth and depth

Mix-Ins (optional)

  • 1/2 cup chocolate chunks or chips for added chocolate flavor and texture
  • Flaky salt for finishing, optional

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper.
  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  • In another bowl, blend the granulated sugar, brown sugar, melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  • Gradually introduce the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing gently until just combined.
  • If using chocolate chunks or chips, fold them into the dough.

Baking

  • Scoop tablespoon-sized portions of dough onto your prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
  • Top each dough ball with additional chocolate chunks and a light sprinkle of flaky salt, if desired.
  • Bake the cookies for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are set but the centers still appear soft.
  • Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for about 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack.

Notes

Use room-temperature eggs for easier blending. Don't overmix when combining wet and dry ingredients; stop as soon as you see no flour. Allow the cookies to cool completely on wire racks to maintain their texture. For chewier cookies, slightly underbake them. Store cookies in an airtight container to maintain freshness.
