Materials

Custard Base

  • 2 cups milk whole or low-fat
  • 2 tbsp custard powder
  • 3 tbsp sugar adjust to taste
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 0.5 tbsp butter

Fruit and Cake

  • 1 cup fresh apples diced, Fuji or Honeycrisp recommended
  • 1 cup sponge or pound cake cubes
  • 0.5 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp chopped almonds toasted if desired

Garnish

  • Fresh mint leaves or apple slices for garnish

Instructions

  • Warm the milk in a saucepan over medium heat until steaming but not boiling.
  • In a small bowl, mix custard powder with a few tablespoons of cold milk to form a smooth paste.
  • Slowly whisk the custard paste into the warm milk. Stir continuously until the mixture thickens into a smooth custard.
  • Add sugar, vanilla extract, and butter. Stir until fully dissolved and silky.
  • Sauté diced apples in a skillet with a little butter and cinnamon for 2–3 minutes until lightly softened.
  • In serving bowls or glasses, layer cake cubes at the bottom, then pour the warm custard over them.
  • Add the sautéed apples over the custard. Swirl gently and sprinkle with chopped almonds.
  • Serve warm or refrigerate for 30 minutes before serving for a chilled dessert.
  • Garnish with mint leaves or apple slices before serving.

Notes

Make it your own by swapping sponge cake for ladyfingers or cupcakes. Stir in ricotta or Greek yogurt before chilling for an extra creamy twist. Excellent both warm and cold — a versatile dessert for any occasion.
