Equipment

  • Electric Mixer
  • 8-inch Round Cake Pans
  • Cooling Rack

Ingredients

Cake Batter

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk or buttermilk for extra tenderness
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch salt

Frosting

  • 1 1/2 cups heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder or 1 tsp vanilla extract for vanilla frosting
  • 3/4 cup powdered sugar

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease two 8-inch round cake pans.
  • Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add to butter mixture, alternating with milk.
  • Stir in vanilla extract. Mix until just combined; don’t overmix.
  • Divide batter evenly between pans. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  • Cool cakes completely before frosting.
  • To make the frosting, whip heavy cream, cocoa (or vanilla), and powdered sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Frost and decorate as desired. Try piped swirls, simple smooth layers, or a rustic finish.

Notes

This cake is adaptable — add chocolate chips, fruit layers, or switch to a buttercream frosting if you prefer. For a richer chocolate flavor, add a tablespoon of coffee to the frosting. Store leftovers in the fridge or freezer, and reheat gently.
