Ingredients
  

For the Custard Slice

  • 2 sheets flaky puff pastry, defrosted provides a light, layered texture
  • cup custard powder contributes creaminess and sweetness
  • cup sugar adds sweetness
  • 2 tsp vanilla essence enhances flavor
  • 1 L milk provides moisture and richness
  • 1 large egg helps bind the custard
  • 50 g butter adds richness
  • 2 cups icing sugar for a sweet topping
  • 25 g butter, softened for creaminess in the icing
  • 4-5 Tbsp hot water to achieve icing consistency
  • 1 Tbsp cocoa adds a touch of chocolate flavor

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven and prepare a baking sheet. Line the sheet with parchment paper.
  • Lay one sheet of flaky puff pastry onto the prepared baking sheet and press it down gently.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine the custard powder and sugar. Whisk them together until well mixed.
  • Carefully pour in the milk while continuing to whisk the mixture.
  • Transfer the mixture to a saucepan over medium heat, stirring continuously.
  • Once thickened, remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
  • Add in the egg and vanilla essence, whisking to combine thoroughly.
  • Pour the custard mixture over the pastry base in the baking sheet and spread it evenly.
  • Place the second sheet of puff pastry on top of the custard layer and press down gently.

Baking

  • Bake according to the instructions until the top turns a beautiful golden brown.
  • Allow the custard slice to cool properly before slicing.

Icing and Serving

  • While the custard slice cools, prepare the icing by combining icing sugar, softened butter, cocoa, and hot water.
  • Spread the icing over the top of the cooled custard slice.
  • Slice into squares or rectangles and serve.

Notes

Ensure the puff pastry is fully defrosted for even baking. Let the custard slice cool completely before icing to prevent melting. Adjust the icing consistency with more water or icing sugar as needed.
