Ingredients

Chocolate and Custard Layers

  • 150 g dark chocolate (chopped, for a rich flavor)
  • 500 ml ready-made custard (provides creaminess and sweetness)

Cream Layer

  • 600 ml double cream (adds volume and lightness)
  • 2 tbsp icing sugar (sweetens the whipped cream)

Base and Fruit Layers

  • 1 jumbo chocolate swiss roll (offers a soft, spongy texture)
  • 4-5 tbsp kirsch (optional, for a subtle cherry flavor)
  • 400-600 g cherries in kirsch/syrup/cherry pie filling (for sweetness and juiciness)
  • 200 g fresh cherries (adds freshness and a pop of color)
  • 200 g cherry jam or conserve (enhances cherry flavor)
  • 1 tub brownie bites (provides a rich chocolate layer)
  • 25 g grated chocolate (for garnish and texture)

Instructions

Preparation

  • Chop dark chocolate into small pieces and melt it in a heatproof bowl over simmering water. Stir until smooth and let it cool slightly.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine the ready-made custard with half of the cooled melted dark chocolate and mix until uniform.
  • Whip the double cream with icing sugar until soft peaks form.
  • Slice the chocolate swiss roll into even rounds and arrange them in a serving dish.

Assembly

  • Drizzle kirsch over swiss roll slices, if using.
  • Spread the chocolate custard mixture over the swiss roll layer.
  • Add a layer of cherries in syrup over the custard.
  • Fold whipped cream into the remaining melted dark chocolate and layer this mixture over the cherries.
  • Top with the remaining whipped cream.
  • Sprinkle brownie bites over the top and finish with grated chocolate.

Notes

Use very cold cream for the best-whipped texture. Let the trifle chill for a couple of hours before serving to enhance flavor.
