Ingredients
  

For the Cake

  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour for tender, strong layers
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder for deep chocolate flavor
  • 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt enhances the chocolate
  • 2 tsp espresso powder enhances depth (no coffee taste)
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil adds moisture and tenderness
  • 2 large eggs at room temperature
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract adds warmth and depth
  • 1 cup buttermilk for a moist, tender crumb
  • 1 cup strong hot coffee or hot water

For the Chocolate Buttercream

  • 1 1/4 cups unsalted butter softened to room temperature
  • 3 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar
  • 3/4 cup cocoa powder sifted
  • 3–5 tbsp heavy cream adjust for spreadable texture
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch salt to balance the sweetness

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (177°C). Grease two 9-inch pans and line bottoms with parchment paper.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and espresso powder.
  • In another bowl, whisk together oil, eggs, and vanilla. Add buttermilk and whisk until smooth.
  • Combine wet and dry ingredients. Stir in hot coffee. Batter will be thin — that’s good!
  • Divide batter between pans and bake 23–26 minutes. Test with toothpick for doneness.
  • Let cakes cool in pans 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  • Make buttercream: Beat butter until creamy. Add sugar, cocoa, salt, vanilla, and cream. Beat until fluffy.
  • Level cooled cakes if needed. Frost between layers and over top and sides. Smooth with a spatula.
  • Refrigerate at least 30 minutes before slicing. Enjoy!

This cake pairs beautifully with chocolate curls, gold dust, or fresh flowers. Chill before slicing for a flawless presentation.
