Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare your 9x9-inch baking pan by lining it with parchment paper.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, and unsweetened cocoa powder. Whisk thoroughly to ensure no lumps.
  • In a separate bowl, melt the unsalted butter with the canola oil until smooth and combined.

Mixing

  • Add granulated sugar to the melted butter and oil, mixing until smooth.
  • Incorporate the eggs and egg yolk one at a time, stirring well after each addition.
  • Blend in the vanilla extract until well combined.
  • Gradually incorporate the dry mixture into the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  • Gently fold in the chocolate chips using a rubber spatula.

Baking

  • Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan, smoothing it evenly. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes.
  • Check for doneness with a toothpick; it should come out with a few moist crumbs attached.

Notes
