Ingredients

Dry ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour provides structure
  • 1 cup granulated sugar adds sweetness
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder helps the cake rise
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda boosts leavening
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt enhances flavor
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon adds warmth and spice

Wet ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened adds richness and moisture
  • 2 large eggs binds ingredients together
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract adds depth of flavor
  • 1/2 cup milk moisture contributor

Filling

  • 4 cups peeled and chopped fresh apples (such as Granny Smith) provides moisture and flavor
  • 1/2 cup raisins optional; adds chewiness and sweetness

For serving

  • 1 Custard sauce for serving

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and ground cinnamon. Whisk the dry ingredients together until they’re evenly mixed.
  • Add the softened unsalted butter to the dry ingredients. Work the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs lightly. Add the eggs, vanilla extract, and milk into the flour mixture and stir gently until just combined.
  • Carefully fold in the chopped apples and raisins, if using, until evenly distributed.
  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking dish.
  • Pour the apple batter into the greased baking dish, smoothing the top with a spatula.

Baking

  • Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake until golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Remove from the oven and allow the cake to cool for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Serving

  • Serve the cake warm or at room temperature with custard sauce.

Notes

Make sure to allow the cake to cool before slicing. Store leftovers in an airtight container for optimal freshness.
