Ingredients
  

Dry Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup milk

Optional Topping

  • powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease an 8-inch round cake pan.
  • In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • In a separate bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla extract.
  • Alternate adding dry ingredients and milk to the wet mixture, mixing just until combined.
  • Pour batter into the pan, smooth the top, and bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  • Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

Customize with fruit, nuts, or cinnamon sugar. Be sure not to overmix for the best crumb. This cake is best served warm or at room temperature.
