Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a mixing bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • In another bowl, cream together the softened unsalted butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  • Mix in the lemon zest and fresh lemon juice.
  • Alternately add buttermilk and sour cream to the butter mixture, starting and ending with the flour mixture.

Baking

  • Divide the batter evenly between prepared cake pans.
  • Bake until a toothpick inserted comes out clean, about 30 minutes.
  • Cool in pans for about 10 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack.

Frosting

  • Beat together softened cream cheese and unsalted butter until smooth.
  • Gradually add powdered sugar and mix until combined.
  • Mix in lemon zest and lemon juice.

Assembly

  • Spread a layer of frosting on top of one cake layer.
  • Place the second layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake.
  • Garnish with lemon slices.

Notes

Ensure all ingredients are at room temperature for better integration. Avoid overmixing for a tender crumb. Let cakes cool completely before frosting.
