Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 cup granulated sugar adds sweetness and texture
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened provides moisture and richness
  • 2 large eggs acts as a binder and adds structure
  • 1 tablespoon lemon zest enhances the lemon flavor
  • ¼ cup freshly squeezed lemon juice adds tartness and moisture
  • cups all-purpose flour forms the base structure
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder helps the dessert rise
  • ½ teaspoon salt enhances overall flavor
  • ½ cup whole milk adds moisture and creaminess

Glaze

  • 1 cup powdered sugar for sweetness and a smooth glaze
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice adds brightness to the glaze

Instructions

Preparation

  • Start by preparing your mixing bowl. Combine the granulated sugar and softened unsalted butter. Use a whisk to cream them together until light and fluffy.
  • Add the large eggs one at a time, whisking well after each addition.
  • Incorporate the lemon zest, gently stirring until evenly distributed.
  • Measure and add the freshly squeezed lemon juice to the bowl. Mix until just combined.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt, then gradually incorporate this dry mixture into the wet mixture.
  • Pour in the whole milk and gently mix until smooth.
  • Transfer the batter into a prepared baking dish, smoothing the top with a spatula.

Baking and Glazing

  • Bake until the edges slightly pull away from the sides of the dish, indicating it is cooked through.
  • Allow to cool slightly before preparing the glaze by combining powdered sugar and lemon juice until smooth.
  • Drizzle the glaze over the warm dessert and let it soak in slightly.
  • Cool completely in the baking dish before cutting into squares.

Notes

Use fresh lemon juice for the best flavor. Don't overmix after adding the flour to maintain a light texture. Consider serving with fresh fruit or a dollop of whipped cream.
